How To Care, Grow, and Propagate Snake Plant (Sansevieria)?

The Scientific name of the Snake Plant is Dracaena Trifasciata. In the last four to five years, snake plants have become very common and famous. For those people who keep indoor plants in their homes, you will find snake plants somewhere at their houses, in societies, in malls, in offices, and in restaurants.

These are the two biggest reasons why they are famous; the first is that if you keep it at your home, then the concentration of oxygen increases, the air purifies and there is freshness in the room.  And the second biggest reason is that if you keep it in your bedroom, then neither you will have any problem, nor it will have a problem. This is a very hardy and low-maintenance plant.

This is a very hardy, very strong plant if you understand it. If you understand this, then you can make many plants from one plant free of cost.

First of all, you will call a snake plant as snake plant even in the nursery. It is known by this name only. This plant was named snake because of its leaves, their texture is such that it looks like a snake’s hood from above. this is why it is called as snake plant. The second thing is when you will go to bring it from the nursery then it will be available between 100-200 rupees. There are many varieties of snake plants are there. They come in many different ways, some are very long, some are short and dense and some have different colors. If you want to keep one indoors, then you should keep those ones that are dense, not those that are tall.

Temperature:-

This plant will grow throughout the year, its growth never stops, it slows down for some time but the growth continues. For this, the ideal temperature which we call the perfect temperature is between 15-35 degree centigrade. If the temperature is too high, then its speed slows down a bit ad when the temperature is down too much then keep the plant inside your house and do not let the dew fall. If there was a very dense and healthy snake plant, it is not that it will die, it will not die. Some of its leaves will rot and get spoiled, but the plant recovers on its own as the weather changes. This plant grows well throughout the year if you have given proper fertilizer and watered properly.

Best time to Purchase:-

You can buy this plant anytime from March to October. And when you go to buy it from the nursery, then keep in mind one thing whenever you buy a snake plant, it should not have one or two leaves, it should have many leaves and should have at least 2-3 pups. Because if you brought a snake plant with two leaves and if both the leaves get rotted, then you will have a loss. So whenever you buy a snake plant, buy a very dense one, you should see two to four pups or small baby plants in a single pot.

Repotting:-

Most plant lovers often get confused about the caring process of plants. They search everywhere, how do repot a snake plant? or the propagation of the spider plant .this is a crucial factor for plants to remain healthy.

How To Repot A Snake Plant?

This plant should stay in the previous pot until the pot is completely filled with small baby plants or small pups. When it is filled with pups, only then we should shift it to another pot or divide the plant.

Where to keep:-

When you bring plants from outside, there are different requirements for each plant. And the big issue for snake plants is where to keep them. You can keep them in three places. The first is a medium-light area. A medium-light area is an area that receives a good amount of light, You can also work with the lights off.

The second is a bright light area; a room where there is very good light, you can keep it in that room, do not keep it in the Sun, but there is a lot of light in the room, so you can keep the snake plant at such a place.

And third, you can keep it in a place where the early morning sunlight falls, maximum till 9’o clock. If the sun is falling in any of your areas till nine o’clock, then you can keep the snake plant in that place. You will never keep it in severe heat. If you keep it in severe heat, then its leaves start burning. Even if you are keeping it outside, then keep it under a big or dense plant where it gets shade on top of it. There is a very important thing that you will never keep plants in the dark or in the dark area. You should never keep them in the dark because the plants have sunlight as their food, if not sunlight, then light, at least the light should be there.

Watering:-

When it comes to watering, we touch the soil of all the plants from above, if it is looking dry from above, then we have to give water. But the scene with Snake Plant is a little different. It is a succulent and its requirements are slightly different. The snake plant is a succulent, its leaves already have moisture, it does not need to be given much water at all, and it does not need as much water as we think. The biggest reason for plant failure is overwatering or under-watering. It is not that we do not need to water it, but we need to take care of two things.

First, as we water the normal plants, we usually see that the soil above is dry and water is given. But in this, we have to wait for more. We do not see only one inch of soil from above, we need to see at least two or three inches of soil from above, when we find it dry, then we have to water it. And whenever we give water, we will give it very well, why, because then we will give water after ten to fifteen days. The second thing is that the method of giving water to this plant should be such that the gap or frequency has to be maintained.

It should not happen that you were giving water in the first four days and then suddenly you have given a gap of twenty days. So now when you water it after twenty days, it will rot, and its leaves will start rotting, so always maintain a gap. In the rainy season and in winter it is obvious that you will have to give less water, but you follow a schedule, We need to clean its leaves, not with any enzymes or raw milk, simply take some water in a tissue paper and wipe the leave. If you are pouring water on its leaves, then make sure the water does not stop. If the water starts to stagnate on the leaves, then the leaves start rotting.

Best Soil Mixture For Snake Plant:-

The soil of the Snake Plant is different from other plants because it is succulent. You will never plant this in clay soil, for this, the soil should be sandy, and if you do not have sandy soil then we will make the soil sandy. Whatever soil you have at your place, you need to take it, and clean it well; it should not have termites, insects, not even pieces of glass, roots, or plastic, these all should not be there.

We need to take compost as much as the soil is taken, compost can be any, it can be vermicompost, leave compost, cow dung compost, kitchen compost, can be any compost. And we need to take sand twice as much as the soil we have taken. We need to take this river sand. So, by putting this sand, the soil will become friable. Snake plant does not like stagnant water at all, So whatever soil you are making, will have 50% sand, 25% soil, and 25% compost.  If you want, you can add Neem Cake a little.

By adding Neem Cake, It does not contain fungus and insects. First of all, we will fill it with the soil that we prepared and pour the water into it. This must be done in advance; you do not have to water it after placing the cutting. Whenever you choose the pot, the size of the pot should be small in real and the hole at the bottom should have proper drainage, which means when we put water, it should come out. Otherwise, your snake plant will get spoiled.
